Vinyl siding materials and options

Vinyl siding is an exterior cladding made primarily from PVC plastic. Available profiles include traditional horizontal lap, Dutch lap, vertical board-and-batten, and wood-grain finishes. Standard panels offer an economical exterior finish; insulated vinyl siding adds a foam backing. Compare the specific product’s thickness, finish, warranty, and tested wind performance before choosing.

Vinyl does not need routine repainting and the panels do not rot like wood. It still needs cleaning and periodic inspection. Impact, excessive heat, and improper fastening can damage panels. Insulated siding may improve the wall assembly’s thermal performance, but energy savings depend on the entire home.

What proper vinyl siding installation involves

A lasting siding job starts behind the panels. Key installation stages include inspecting the existing exterior, repairing damaged wood, and preparing a flat fastening surface. House wrap or another suitable water-resistive barrier and properly integrated flashing help manage water around windows, doors, and penetrations.

Starter strips, corners, trim, and panels must match the selected system. Panels need room for temperature-related movement; fastening them too tightly can cause buckling. Siding is an exterior cladding, not a waterproof barrier. For Greater New Orleans homes, product selection and fastening details should address the property’s wind exposure and applicable local requirements, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

How much does vinyl siding cost?

For preliminary budgeting, HomeGuide reports a national installed range of $4–$12 per square foot of siding coverage, including material and labor. Its typical installed ranges are $4–$7 for traditional or Dutch lap and $6–$12 for insulated vinyl.

At the broad $4–$12 range, 1,000 square feet of siding coverage would equal roughly $4,000–$12,000. This is an illustrative calculation, not a quote. Measure exterior wall coverage rather than the home’s interior floor area. Contractors also use a “square,” meaning 100 square feet of siding.

These national figures are general planning information, not Reinhardt Restoration LLC prices or a verified New Orleans market average. Actual pricing requires measurements and a review of the existing exterior.

What changes the final project price?

Material grade, profile, insulation, trim details, wall height, access, and the amount of cutting around openings all affect the price. Removal and disposal of existing siding, concealed rot, sheathing repairs, flashing, and wall preparation can add to the total. Confirm what the written estimate includes so you can compare the same scope of work.
